Phillps Staying, Ameobi Deal On?

West Brom striker and reported Ipswich target Kevin Phillips looks set to extend his stay at the Hawthorns, meaning that the Baggies will ditch their interest in Town target Shola Ameobi.

Ipswich allegedly put in a £3.5 million bid for the Newcastle striker two weeks ago, with a subsequent 'no comment' issued on the club's website. It was believed that Ameobi was holding out for a Premiership club to come in for him.

Later reports suggested that Ipswich boss Jim Magilton hadn't spoke to the former England U21 international, as Ameobi was yet to return from his honeymoon. West Brom then had a fee accepted for the Magpies striker, believed to be £2.5 million. The Baggies were keen for Ameobi to replace striker Kevin Phillips who looked set to leave the Hawthorns.

However, the veteran Baggies striker is now on the verge of signing a new deal, claiming that the chance to play in the Premiership at this stage of his career is too big an opportunity to miss. Phillips had originally wanted a two-year deal, while ex-Ipswich defender and West Brom boss Tony Mowbray only willing to offer the 34-year-old a one-year contract.

This now leaves Ameobi searching for a new club after being told he is not part of Kevin Keegan's plans at Newcastle. Ipswich are still thought to be interested as they continue their search for a goalscorer that will take them to the Premiership.

I really cannot see why so many clubs are after this donkey. £3.5 million for someone who score four or five goals a season!

wouldnt mind seeing at PR but money wise its abit high for the return off him

Well, I guess that it would be a decent move to bring Ameobi to Town, as it would prevent any rivals getting him! However, I wouldn't just rely on him, I would really like to see Ipswich bring in another one or two strikers in addition, just as a bit of strength in depth. For me they would have to be Guerra and Lisbie. This would mean a strike 'quad' of Counago, Guerra, Ameobi and Lisbie (any two from four therefore), with Rhodes having a short-term loan spell, to get some goals under his belt, and Lee available for any decent club interseted (maybe Col U loan).

Yeah Shola would probably be a good signing, if he can find his form in the Championship no doubt he bang in the goals...... But can Shola Ameobi find any form???? he hasn't done for a while now and he didn't last season at Stoke. A massive risk with the fee involved, but a risk i would definatly take.
