Ipswich Snub Portsmouth Norris Bid?

Reports claim that Ipswich Town captain David Norris is being sought after by Portsmouth, with the Blues said to have rejected an initial offer for the player.

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill is said to have bid just 250,000 for the 29-year-old, whom Jim Magilton signed from Plymouth for an estimated 2 million three years ago. If true, the offer would surely be nothing short of an insult.

It would be no surprise if Norris is attracting interest from other clubs. Since being handed the captaincy after the departure of Jon Walters in August 2010, Norris has excelled in the Ipswich team this year. A string of good performances has been capped with 6 goals in all competitions, making him one of Town's highest scorers so far this campaign.

There is concern however that the Blues may struggle to keep hold of the midfielder, who is one of 21 Town players set to be out-of-contract in the summer. Indeed, Norris recently urged the club to give him a new contract if they do not wish for him to start looking elsewhere. Should the club allow him to move on, it would likely prove very controversial with the fans.

Meanwhile, another man who could be set to leave is Jake Livermore. The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is due to return to White Hart Lane next week, but he is likely to leave earlier than then due to a groin injury for which he is expected to require surgery.

Elsewhere Livermore's Spurs team-mate and former Town loanee Andros Townsend has joined Championship rivals Watford on loan until the end of the season. The 19-year-old left Portman Road in December despite originally signing a deal until May 2011 due to a lack of first team football under previous boss Roy Keane.

If there is any truth in these reports, 250,000 is an absolute joke of an offer for Norris. If anything, he's more valuable to us right now than he was to Plymouth three years ago - I've heard pleny of people suggesting that him and McAuley are becoming the backbone of this Town squad, and he's not just one of our top performers but one of our top scorers to boot. Must say I'm a bit gutted about Townsend as well. I was hoping that he would either stay at Spurs or come back to Portman Road rather than ending up joining one of our rivals. Frankly I think Keane was wrong to have left him out of the team so frequently; something which undoubtedly cost us the lad's services.

I think the offer reflects the fact that he is out of contract shortly, Pompey paid 7m for Nugent, Blackpool are alledgedly willing to offer 500k for him now!

I take your point - I dare say Portsmouth are aware that Norris has been getting a bit antsy about his future lately. Even so, the Nugent example is a little different because he has unquestionably struggled since he left Preston - as indeed have Portsmouth in that time. Norris has never had such trouble though - he's still playing at the same level as we signed him and he's perhaps better now than he was at Plymouth, and that should really be reflected in his value in my view.

Portsmouth's offer for Chuck is reminiscent of the offer Charlton made for Matt Holland back in 2003: a complete joke! However, we are not strapped for cash at the moment and have no need to sell him for such a paltry sum. In fact, as Darren has mentioned, Norris is a key member for our team and one of the few consistently good performers. The focus shouldn't be on Portsmouth trying to take him, but on the Town hierarchy getting a new contract sorted!

I would hope the club pulls their finger out quickly concerning Norris' contract - quotes going around today that Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill says Norris wants to move to Fratton Park. Could be just exaggerating, could even be a negotiation tactic by Norris. Who knows. Rather concerning though.
