Non-League Ollie The Mann For Ipswich?

Non-League Ollie The Mann For Ipswich?

Ipswich Town are one of several Football League clubs reported to be interested in striker Ollie Mann of non-league Brantham Athletic.

Mann has proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer for the Ridgeons League Premier Division side, scoring 42 goals in their First Division promotion campaign last year before netting 43 times in just 37 matches in all competitions this season, despite a lengthy injury layoff at the start of the season. The highly-rated 21-year-old, who has a year left on his current contract, is attracting attention from a number of Football League clubs including Ipswich, Southend United and Leyton Orient, though Dagenham & Redbridge are thought to be leading the chase at present.

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell has already shown his willingness to try out players from non-league level having signed Andy Drury from Luton Town in January. Having reportedly sent scouts to watch the striker net a hat-trick in Brantham's 6-2 win over Newmarket Town two weeks ago, it would not be a surprise if Jewell is prepared to gamble the reported £20,000 asking price.

Meanwhile reports are again linking Town with Doncaster Rovers hotshot Billy Sharp as well as two of his team-mates at the Keepmoat Stadium. Defender George Friend has been mentioned as a possible target whilst the Blues have been linked several times with midfielder James Coppinger, who was voted by Rovers fans as their Player Of The Year for 2010/11.

Interesting rumour, this. There are non-league strikers out there who have proven themselves capable of making the step-up to become goalscorers for Football League clubs - Paul Benson, Steve Morison, Charlie Austin and DJ Campbell are a few examples in recent years. It's a pretty big jump though and I would be somewhat surprised if we did actually go for him.

Might be worth a gamble , no greater risk than some of the old crocks we have allowed to play for us....Better to sign someone who has a bit of hunger about them than some old crock who is on the look out for one last pay day.
