Whight Signs Pro Deal At Town

Whight Signs Pro Deal At Town

Academy defender Joe Whight has put pen to paper on a two year professional contract at Ipswich Town.

Whight has yet to make a first team appearance for Ipswich but was named on the bench several times towards the end of last season. The 17-year-old was first offered a contract by manager Paul Jewell in April and had reportedly been attracting interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United, but the left-back has now committed himself to fighting for a first team place at Portman Road.

Whight told the Official Ipswich Town Website: 'I'm obviously delighted to have signed and hopefully it shows I am heading in the right direction.'

'It's just a great education and now it's down to me to impress the manager as much as I can and push for a place in the first team. That's the challenge for me.'

Whight looks set to compete with new signing Aaron Cresswell and veteran Mark Kennedy in the left-back position, but the second year scholar has impressed with the U18s and reserves and offers plenty of promise for the future.

Meanwhile two of Town's other academy defenders, Josh Meekings and Rory McKeown, are set to move on after being released earlier in the summer. Meekings has signed a two year deal at Inverness Caledonian Thistle whilst McKeown is understood to be on trial at Kilmarnock.

Hope PJ rewards the boys loyalty and he gets a few outings as the season advances.
