McCarthy Couldn't Be Prouder

Manager Mick McCarthy has seen us bring the curtain down on the season with a victory over Sheffield Wednesday, and although we didn't quite get over the line in terms of the play off spot, he's said he couldn't be prouder of the team for their efforts this season.

Speaking to the Official Site after the match, the gaffer said he was delighted to see us end the season with a victory and he thought it was a good game overall.

'It was nice to go out on a winning note, Sheffield Wednesday played very well. It was an end of season game, an open game. We had to dig in when they were on top and Gerks was outstanding.'

McCarthy goes on to say that he has 'hung his hat' on Gerken this season and he feels he's been fantastic and repaid that faith, because there have certainly been questions about Scott Loach coming in and playing a bigger part at points.

'He was magnificent for us again and we defended well. You have to defend set pieces well and they paid the price for that with our winning goal.'

McCarthy goes on to say that it was similar against Watford, where the game was hinged at one all and he thought we'd go on to get the winner and push into the play offs but we gave away a cheap free kick and then didn't defend it properly, so he was pleased to see that somewhat balance out yesterday even though it just means we end the season on a high and not something greater.

'The disappointment is still there that we have not made the play offs but I'm proud of what the players have achieved this season and they should be proud of themselves.'
