Are Ipswich Town Going Down?

Can it really get any worse than this? Well, the answer appears to be yes it can because we have now suffered injuries to some of our key players who have been forced out of international involvement.

Both Tom Lawrence and David McGoldrick have pulled out their squads for Wales and Ireland respectively and we can only hope this is a precautionary measure on the part of manager Mick McCarthy, given our sorry position in the Championship, where we now find ourselves just five points off the drop zone!

It makes for very depressing reading and North Stander writing for the East Anglian Daily Times said it was the worst few days in his 49 years of supporting the Town.

I have supported the Blues for even longer and I must confess, I have never known anything quite as bad as this. The third tier of English football beckons - unless we can pull our socks up fast.

It is not just the losing of games that is the problem but it is our inability to win many of them that must be the major cause of concern to most supporters.

Manager Mick McCarthy does not seem to have a plan B and his negative approach towards most games, only exacerbates the situation in my view.

There is little doubt that McCarthy has his favourites and his favourites tend to be players who can defend - or at least attempt to and this applies as much to our midfield, as it does to the defence itself so is it any wonder we have become the score draw specialists of the Championship.

If both Lawrence and McGoldrick do not recover in time for the visits of Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic in a couple of weeks, then we could be in deep trouble.

Tom Lawrence has been by far the best of our attacking options this term and David McGoldrick has been showing signs of returning to his best form - although sadly without the goals.

This would leave us with Freddie Sears, Brett Pitman and Kieffer Moore as our main strike force and their form has been patchy of late to say the least so it is all rather worrying.

With eight games to go there is still twenty four points up for grabs but we have to start winning again quickly and what better place to start than at Portman Road on April Fools Day!
