Town Continue To Rise Up The Football League

Town Continue To Rise Up The Football League

Ipswich have had an and excellent start to the new campaign which no one had predicted. Four straight wins in the league and the cup triumph away at Luton have caused a few eyebrows to be raised.

Some of the big money teams have yet to find their feet and in the meantime the Blues Army are marching on. The 4-3 away win at Millwall mid-week was quite extraordinary and showed great resilience and determination.

With a massive injury list Ipswich were again unfancied against Brentford who many expect to be much higher up the table. And it was Brentford who started better producing some good football and producing plenty of chances in the first half.

Ipswich didn't play particularly well in the first half but what shone through was their determination to battle against the odds, as a team marshalled well by Cole Skuse, who was deputising for Luke Chambers - the latest to be added to the list of injuries.

The team spirit was excellent and was epitomised by the makeshift back four who defended magnificently with block after block. Jonas Knudsen stood out and even produced a Chambers fist pump at the end to the delight of the Portman Road faithful.

At the other end of the pitch, we had a front five again as we had at Millwall and they were exciting to watch. The question was who would score today? As it happened, it was the irresistible terrier-like Joe Garner and top scorer Martin Waghorn who provided our two goals. They were well deserved with goal-line technology rightly allowing our second to stand.

Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor again deserve huge praise for coming through hell to get to the point where Ipswich have won five games in a row and sit equal top in the Championship and without many of the recognised first team too!

This is proving to be an amazing start to the season and crowd numbers must surely now go up once everyone is back from their summer holidays.

Only 15,000 saw Ipswich today but they all left very happy indeed.

With our new strikers we now have what we lacked last year after Daryl Murphy left.

The other new players have been fantastic too and it is heartening to see our young hopefuls being given a chance and taking it with aplomb.

It's a good time to be an Ipswich fan! We lie in second place behind Cardiff on goal difference and we still have a 100% record in all competitions.
