Ipswich Town Loss Is No Disgrace

Ipswich Town Loss Is No Disgrace

In general, Town supporters took the defeat to Fulham at Portman road on Saturday very well.

We all knew it had to happen probably sooner than later and when it came, few would deny that the best team won.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that it has taken us so long to fall to our first league defeat - given our pre-season form and the spate of injuries we have suffered.

Now the manager and players can take a well earned break, having surprised us all by the way they have played and the points we have accrued.

On Saturday it was clearly a bridge too far and it if it had not been for a string of fine saves from Bartosz Bialkowski, the scoreline could have been much more embarrassing.

It is re-assuring to hear him say today that he has no intention of leaving the club in the transfer window and that he would be quite happy to end his career here.

It is a big relief to know that he is so contented but owner Marcus Evans should tie him down to a longer deal I feel, before he changes his mind!

I guess the thinking is that he his happy here so there is no need to extend his contract just yet but given the fact that he has been our star performer again this season, surely it is the very least this wonderful keeper deserves.

As for that defeat, manager Mick McCarthy was very frank in his post match interview and explained, 'I think sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opposition and say well done.'

He continued, ' It`s easy for me to criticise ours, we`ve had a brilliant month - twelve points from our games and we`ve come up against a team today who were just streets in front of us and have absolutely bashed us - with the ball, without the ball, they were just very good.'

Town lost possession too easily at times and before Fulham scored, David McGoldrick missed a wonderful chance to put the ball in the net but instead shot tamely at their keeper, when there was a man in space which was disappointing. Our chances though were rare.

There is no need however for us to be too critical on this occasion because Town were beaten by a far better team and as we go into the two week international break, we still find ourselves second in the table.

The Blues now have time to get some of their walking wounded fit again and who knows, by the time we face Queens Park Rangers away on the 9th September, our squad might look a lot healthier too!

It has been a remarkable start to the season, one that many in the Championship would love to have.It sets the club up nicely to have a real go at a promotion push, the team were not fancied at the start of the season however every year there always seems to be one surprise team in the top six,why not this club this season.Once a team gets into a winning habit it tends to build confidence, one loss isn't so bad,it's a timely reminder the team won't have it all their own way and will have to fight for every point.
