Can The Blues Maintain Their Sparkling Form?

Can The Blues Maintain Their Sparkling Form?

We were all rather fearful when we looked at our fixture list a few weeks ago. It made for horror reading given our frail form.

But then we faced Hull City away (2-2) Sheffield Wednesday at home (2-2), Aston Villa away (2-0), Derby County away (0-1), and Nottingham Forest at home - which of course we won 4-2!

Now the cynics amongst us would have said that we would do well to get any points at all from that lot and yet, as we review our most recent football past, we ended up winning two, drawing two and losing just one. Even then, we arguably deserved perhaps a draw.

One myth was destroyed too. The notion that we could only beat sides who were struggling near the bottom of the table. Derby are admittedly still three points ahead of us but poor Nottingham Forest now find themselves in 13th place and the only team to beat us in this sequence Aston Villa, are now just four points in front of us in fifth!

Hull City have more recently parted company with their under fire Russian coach Leonid Slutsky and since that narrow 0-1 loss to Norwich in October, the Canaries have sunk almost beyond trace and have now gone eight games without a win, which I guess, is a football form of instant karma! They now find themselves in 16th place and eight points behind the Blues once more.

So then, can Ipswich Town maintain their momentum and get even closer to those illusive play off places? Well, according to former Town boss George Burley he believes we can!

Burley explained his reasons. 'If Ipswich perform as they did on Saturday (against Forest) then I think they have a very good chance of finishing in the top six. But Saturday was the best performance I've seen Ipswich play and I always look at performances rather than results. If you perform well you will win games. There were encouraging signs and they looked like they have a team which is capable of finishing in the top six.'

Let us hope he is right and remember, the last time we made it back to the Premier League, it was under his watch, so he should know a thing or two about getting there.

Next up is a tough away game at Middlesborough on Saturday but another good result at the Riverside, and we could have reached the heady heights of a top six spot just in time for Christmas.

Now then, to all those dedicated Ipswich Town fans out there, it would surely be the best festive present of all!

Well, I think it probably is. As the new transfer window approaches, the vast majority of Town supporters believe that our defence is still our weakest link.
