Ipswich's league cup campaign ended, as it so often has in recent years, in defeat early in the competition and against lower league opposition on Tuesday night.

For a ninth time in the past 12-years Town's bid for league cup glory, which of course brought a semi final a few years back, ended at the hands of a lower league opponent with league 1 outfit Crawley Town winning 1-0 at Broadfield.

Crawley started well with Izale McLeod going close, with Frank Nouble having a couple of chances, firstly finishing poorly after being put in by a perfectly weight pass, not a long ball, from Luke Chambers and then off target from Anthony Wordsworth's pinpoint cross.

Further half chances came for both sides before the break but the half ended goalless.

It was almost third time lucky for Nouble within minutes of the restart but his best finish to date ended with veteran 'keeper Brian Jensen saving well. Paul Taylor, who also close in the first half for us, curled one narrowly wide and another saved by Jensen as we pushed on for a winner.

Town looked the more likely winners in 90-minutes with Jensen having to save again from a Balint Bajner effort with a last minute 30-yard effort from Teddy Bishop beating everyone apart from the crossbar so the game went to extra time after ending nil-nil.

With a penalty shootout looming large McLeod's (111) strike, his second in as many games for his new club, proved to be the winner with 9-minutes to play as the league 1 side celebrated a one-nil win and a place in the second round.

Ipswich, we'll we're left to reflect on what could have been....
