Premier League? You're Having A Laugh

Premier League? You're Having A Laugh

Ipswich Town might have set out for a promotion push this season, but was that simply an impossible dream? That's what Vital Ipswich has been asking you in this week's site poll.

Town began the season amongst the Championship's early pace-setters as they claimed 4 wins from their first 7 matches to sit second behind eventual champions QPR. The Blues were still in the playoff places as late as 6 November, leading many fans to believe that Ipswich might just seal their dream promotion to the Premier League this season. Unfortunately, that dream was then crushed by a catastrophic slide under Roy Keane, and apart from some faint hopes of a late playoff push under Paul Jewell, the top flight never looked a likely destination for the rest of the season.

It all started so well, but were we just getting carried away? Did this Town team ever realistically stand a chance of going up this season? Here's what you thought:

32% - Yes
68% - No

It's easy to say it in hindsight, but just over two thirds of those who voted argued that any notion of promotion for the Blues in 2010/11 was altogether far-fetched. Indeed, perhaps the good start to the season was merely a veil for a number of deficiencies and problems which had yet to be addressed, and when the going got tough, Town had neither the quality nor the character to keep themselves in the race.

Depending on what happens this summer, Ipswich fans could find themselves asking exactly the same question next season. What's for sure, if the Blues do get off to another good start under Jewell, we won't be counting our chickens next time!

There will be two polls this week as we look back on some of the standout games of the past year. From Monday we'll be asking you which was Town's worst performance of the campaign, then later in the week we'll be seeking your choice for the Blues' best performance this season. Keep an eye on the right-hand column and make sure your vote counts!

Do you think promotion was ever a realistic possibility for Ipswich this season, or were we always likely to fall off the pace? Share your views using the comment box below.
