Shopping For Half-A-Dozen

Shopping For Half-A-Dozen

Paul Jewell has been promising a busy transfer window for Ipswich Town, but just how many additions will the Blues need for the new season?

After a fairly quiet first month of the close-season, Town sprung to life in the transfer market two weeks ago with the impressive signing of striker Michael Chopra from Cardiff City, followed by the free transfer addition of former Reading defender Ivar Ingimarsson. However, with 12 players released, two loanees returned to parent clubs and others likely to leave before the summer is out, Jewell will need to keep shopping in the hope of bringing in suitable replacements and build a team that is capable of a promotion challenge in 2011/12.

This week therefore, Vital Ipswich has been asking you how many more signings you feel Ipswich need to make this summer. Here's what you thought:

6% - 1-3
63% - 4-6
31% - 7 or more

Opinion would suggest that drastic changes aren't necessarily required, but there is certainly still plenty more work to be done. Almost two thirds of those polled said that Ipswich will need between 4 and 6 further signings in addition to those already made.

Such a quantity of new players is a likelihood this summer given the number of areas that still require cover. Jewell looks set to bring in another striker in addition to Chopra, whilst replacements are needed for David Norris and Jimmy Bullard in midfield and reinforcements in full back positions have been a long-term requirement. A new goalkeeper would also be a sensible addition following the departures of Brian Murphy and Ian McLoughlin, with Marton Fulop also linked with a move away from Portman Road.

In any case, the overwhelming consensus certainly suggests that Town cannot stick with what they have got. Just 6% felt that a maximum of 3 signings would be enough, compared to 31% who were in favour or 7 or more additions. Looks like it's time for Jewell to make another withdrawal from the Bank of Evans...!

This week's poll: 'Of the following midfielders recently linked with Town, which one do you think we should target?' (See right-hand column to view the list and place your vote)

What have you made of our transfer activity this summer? How many more signings do you think we need, and what do you think of the players we have signed already? Share your views using the comment box below.
