Sonko Second Choice For Supporters

Sonko Second Choice For Supporters
Ipswich Town boosted their defence last week with the signing of Ibrahima Sonko - but according to our latest site poll, he wasn't the first choice of the fans.

Town's diabolical defending against Southampton and Peterborough United was the clearest possible evidence that the Blues needed further reinforcements at the back to have any chance of success this season. That came as no surprise to manager Paul Jewell, who had already been on the lookout for new additions to his backline for some time, with a number of players linked in recent weeks.

Of these names, we gave you a shortlist of eight possible targets and asked you which one you felt Town should go for. Here's how you voted:

45% - Pablo Ibanez (West Bromwich Albion)
16% - Ibrahima Sonko (Unattached)
9% - Victor Laguardia (Real Zaragoza)
9% - Richard Stearman (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
9% - Aljaz Struna (FC Koper)
6% - Ryan Shotton (Stoke City)
3% - Shane Duffy (Everton)
3% - Danny Collins (Stoke City)

West Bromwich Albion's Pablo Ibanez was by far the favourite in this poll, claiming just under half the vote. The 30-year-old, who was in Spain's 2006 World Cup squad, had been linked with a possible loan move before the Peterborough match, but there has been little talk about him since.

Also included in our shortlist was Sonko, who ultimately did join Town on a one year contract on Friday. The Senegalese international was second favourite behind Ibanez, but with only 16% of the vote, it is hardly a strong endorsement of Jewell's latest acquisition.

Elsewhere, European-based players Aljaz Struna and Victor Laguardia both picked up 9% each as did Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Richard Stearman, who was seen by some to be a rather unrealistic target. Ryan Shotton, over whom Jewell is believed to be in talks with Stoke City, won 6% of the vote while another target at the Britannia Stadium, Danny Collins, joined Everton youngster Shane Duffy at the bottom with just 3% each.

The summer transfer window closes on Wednesday this week, and Jewell has not ruled out further signings before then. However, it looks increasingly likely that the Town boss will wait until the opening of the 'emergency' loan window in the hope of landing some Premier League targets on short-term deals.

Just thought I'd give you a Stoke fan's view on Sonko, lads! He came to Stoke for about 3 million and after doing well for Reading in the prem we thought he'd be a very good signing. To be blunt, he barely played for us but when he did play - he was one of the most clumsy centre-backs I've had the misfortune of watching at Stoke. He possibly committed the worst foul in Stoke's recent history away at Blackburn in our first season, Benny Mccarthy ghosted into the penalty area and we had plenty of men back so weren't really in trouble, but Sonko took the law into his own hands though and took him completely out, swinging (for the ball I think) and nearly taking Mccarthy's legs off in a moment which was horrifyingly hilarious. He's become the butt of many jokes at Stoke but with new surroundings and at a lower-level he might pull back his previous form from when he was at Reading. He's a really powerful lad and maybe his confidence was just shot, after all, he performed at Reading in the top division, didn't he? He could be a masterstroke, who knows. I see you have Danny Collins in your vote, whilst he's been relatively poor for us at full back I reckon he would do well in the Championship at centre back - he did get Sunderland's player of the year before he joined us. Good luck for the season!

Indeed - Danny Collins and Ryan Shotton. Jewell's confirmed that he has been speaking to your club about two defenders so these two could well be the ones, though I'm not sure you'd let go of Shotton. As for Sonko, he actually won plenty of praise for his debut performance at Town on Saturday, so hopefully we won't see too much of the calamitous stuff you've described - if nothing else, we already have other defenders who can do that! But the "worst foul in Stoke's recent history"? Surely Ryan Shawcross on Aaron Ramsey, no?

T Mc's comments are similar to the Blackburn fans comments about Andrews in that he felt there was an issue with his confidence. Andrews seems to have shrugged that off and maybe Sonko will do likewise in his new surroundings. Time will tell eh.
